This is my first book by this author, and I liked it. The heroine was outstanding, mature, independent, likable, and funny. The hero was handsome and captivated, and they had great chemistry. The storyline was good, and the dialogue sparkling. I can't wait to read the next one in the series!

Silk Is For Seduction The Dressmakers Series Loretta Chase 9780061632686 Books Reviews

Three penniless sisters who have survived the terrors in France, grow up and learn the family modiste business of dressing wealthy ladies, beautifully. Having escaped France to England, they have set up their shop, but they are finding it difficult to attract the patronage of the ladies of the ton.

Marcelline, the oldest of the sisters, is determined to succeed. The pragmatic and creative result of many generations of scandalous forebearers, she has an idea, and sets her sights on winning the business of the lady betrothed to the Duke of Clevedon. A rather badly dressed lady, who could really use her help, but how to achieve an introduction?

Clevedon has famously lived in Paris for years, though he is expected to return to England for his wedding quite soon. Marceline decides to bet everything being introduced to the man, hoping to thereby gain an introduction to his fiance. For the plan to work, it requires that she go to Paris and arrange to meet him by chance. Fortunately, nothing works out as she expects, because although she meets the Duke, now she can't get rid of him!

I really like this series, and often relisten to it. Largely because it's read so beautifully by Kate Reading.

Highly Recommended!
For some reason when the Dressmaker series came out the description of each was unappealing to me. I never read them until now. I started with the 2nd in the series but after getting through several chapters & really enjoying them, I stopped and started with the first. I've truly enjoyed them all. I've enjoyed a majority of Ms Chase's stories - these were appealing with their strong females and heroes who couldn't resist them. I was surprised that in books 2 & 3 the gentlemen pursuing the sisters of a duke's sister-in-law didn't give a thought to planning to have the women as mistresses. That was far-fetched - especially considering how close the men were to the duke. It was a huge suspend belief issue. Otherwise, the stories were fast paced, the rhetoric entertaining, dress descriptions too difficult for me to visualize but interesting. Nice sex and seduction scenes & nice action ones too. The glimpse into the less privileged and how insulated the upper levels were was also interesting. Fun stories I will reread.
Interesting heroine (descended from a long line of con artists sprinkled with shady royal blood), immensely talented, intelligent, and strong. And the hero, such a good man, in spite of his “ducal arrogance” and lack of self control (irresistibly hot). The sexual tension is off the charts, the first real kiss is more like a brawl, and the first love scene, well, wow. Those that follow are no less. Both of their circumstances make a happy ending seem impossible, and if this wasn’t a romance (and I could be absolutely certain it will work out somehow), I’d have stopped reading—I was that emotionally invested. Witty repartee is plentiful and downright brutal at times (heh, heh). And the secondary characters, down to the butler, were no more and no less vivid than they needed to be (an art in itself). Of course the clothes were described in great detail (integral to the plot as clothing is), but the rest of the historical/setting detail was only used where needed i.e. to impress, to set a a mood or stage, to underscore a point, etc. Really loved this one.
Marcelline Noirot owns a dress shop with her two younger sisters. Upon hearing that Gervaise Angier, the seventh Duke of Clevedon, was returning to London from his Grand Tour to claim his intended fiancé, Marcelline formulated a brilliant plan. Clevedon had been the ward of the Marquess of Warford. Clevedon and Lady Clara Fairfax, the eldest of Warford's three daughters, had been intended for each other since birth. Clevedon had doted on her since they were children. He’d never shown any inclination to court another. Marcelline saw a great opportunity for the success of the shop in this engagement. She must procure the patronage of this Duchess-to-be for the shop. Clevedon was still in Paris so Marcelline promptly traveled there to secure the Duke's choice of modiste for his Duchess. The choice simply must be Marcelline's shop.

The plot of this novel is very unique. To provide this uniqueness, a departure from most Regency mores and rules seems necessary. I thought from the beginning that if one would want to secure a Duchess' clothing trade approaching the Duchess would be the most logical choice. However, one would not be alone with the Duke in Paris, causing a romantic tangle. Right? One must suspend logic in most of this book. That aspect took one star off for me.

The fact that the reader immediately knows that this romance is a triangle where one party has to be the loser was disappointing to me, also. The plot is interesting. The point of view is interesting. The characters are likable and make one want to know more. The author's style is captivating. The premise and the ending just did not leave me with that warm, fuzzy satisfaction that most romance invokes in me. I felt that this couple tended to steal their happiness at the expense of others. Not a good feeling for me. All in all, they probably deserve each other. Some readers would probably not be bothered by these concerns and would more readily appreciate the story. It is mostly a personal preference that diluted my enjoyment.

I like this author and I bought the second book in this Dressmaker series at the same time as Silk is for Seduction, but two years have passed, and I just never was drawn to the second book based on this story. Usually, I devour a series immediately. This book makes you choose between two worthy opponents. Dividing my loyalties, for me, takes some of the pleasure away. I did, however, recently stumble upon another Loretta Chase book that revisits some of these characters which is quite good, so I just might go ahead and read that second book.
