Mercenary Instinct The Mandrake Company Series Book 1 eBook Ruby Lionsdrake Reviews

I quite enjoyed this story. Space opera is one of my favorites and this one kept me very entertained. It had constant action, a bit of romance, lots of really bad guys vs less but much better good guys, space ships, of course, really inventive and strong female prisoners (??) who were ever so much more than the poor males imagined (just weak little women - ha!), some laughs, some gasps, some UGHs, it just had a little bit of everything. And no cliffhanger!! There are three women, one now matched up, two more to go. I am really hoping to see two more equally good books in the near future. Thank you, Ruby!
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. However, when I went to write the review, I realized I'd already purchased the book on my own.

I love SF. I love military SF. I love space operas. I love characters with a slightly offbeat sense of humor. This book has it all!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There was just the right amount of action to keep things rolling along without sacrificing the plot and character development. Both the male and female main characters are strong but also have their insecurities. The characters felt real and I wasn't ready to give them up at the end of the story. The other characters weren't as well developed but based on other series I've read by this author, that will come as the series progresses.

Like her other books, I had difficulty putting this book down. In fact, I gave up time in my studio even though I have an upcoming show, because I just had to know what happened next. I'm waiting to start the next book until the show is over, or I won't have any mosaics to sell!

There are some naughty bits but they were just right. Titillating without detracting from the story. For those of you a bit prudish, there were only a couple of sex scenes and it would be easy enough to skip those pages. Don't let that detract you from a wonderful story.

I'll definitely be reading the other books in the series.
This was so much fun to read; the main characters were complex but didn't get too angsty, which can sometimes be a problem in this genre. I loved the fact that there was no insta-love, but a slow-building, believable relationship that made the overall plot more substantial, rather than just a side-by-side progression. I won't bother with a synopsis, since the book blurb is pretty informative, but I will say that both main characters were flawed in such interesting ways, the action and pacing was well done (I read every spare moment I had because there was no point I could put it down!), and the world-building was comprehensive and original.
Definitely pick this one up; it's a great start to a new series, and a new author to watch.
Ankari Markovich and her two associates, a microbiologist and an engineer, are on a distant planet digging for fossilized alien "microbiota" (natural intestinal bacteria) that may have incredible healing properties. It's Ankari's latest business venture, one she hopes will lead to a prosperous future. But they are ambushed and captured by a gang of mercenaries bent on collecting the lucrative bounty on the women's heads. This comes as a shock to the women, who have no clue why someone would be after them.

Captain Viktor Mandrake and his crew take the women to their ship and throw them in the brig. Despite what sounds like an exciting beginning, the book started off a little slow for me. I began feeling more engaged when Ankari uses her pickpocketing and martial arts abilities to try to maneuver an escape. She's a strong, spunky heroine with a great sense of humor. When she and Viktor became attracted to one another, I saw a softer, more protective side to the captain -- a nice contrast to his usual kick-ass, always-in-control style.

The sex scenes, which come after the first half, are steamy and romantic. The pace also ratchets up at around the half-way point, and becomes very exciting. The supporting characters' personalities are also well-defined. The villain, who is merely a name until near the conclusion, is fairly stereotypical, but since his role is minor, I didn't care.

Mercenary Instinct is well-written, without a lot of typos and just a few small grammatical errors -- nothing that yanked me out of the story. I hope Ms. Lionsdrake will continue writing, while resisting the typical decline into formulaic writing so often seen wtih successful writers. The second book in her Mandrake Company series appears to have different characters, rather than featuring another member from the same crew, and I look forward to reading it.
