Flawed Heart House Of Obsidian edition by Bella Jewel Lauren McKellar Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I will start off by saying I really did enjoy finally getting to read about Anabelle and Max.
With that being said, I feel as if this is almost the exact same story line as her other book Til Death. Couple are married, husband does something to hurt wife, she leaves (pregnant might I add), returns home due to something involving family, husband discovers kid, they fight, they make up (I love you always have, even though I stuck my dick in other women while we were still married), the end!
Yes, that is one big problem I had with this book. Even if you're not currently living with your wife, until you sign those divorce papers your 'member' should stay in the pants.
Also, the female characters lately are such doormats. Yes he's her husband, he was her first everything but stand up for yourself woman. Don't just take the excuse 'they were all meaningless'.
Another issue with this book. When couples get married, yes they take vows (for better or worse) but when your doing drugs, drinking your life away, and drain all the money that your woman can't even pay for a doctor's visit you can't seriously blame her for leaving. A woman will do ANYTHING to protect that little child growing inside her even if it means taking herself out of that situation to try and provide a better life for her child.
All in all I'm becoming very disappointed in Bella Jewels books. Her females have no backbone, the men are pussy and have no balls, and the story line is just all the same.
First off I just wanna say that I absolutely love this author! Always 1 click all her books. Sadly this one wasn't one of my favorites. I was really looking forward to this book but when I finished it, I just kind of felt disappointed. I loved the parts where we read about how Max and Belle got together. My problems with this book is when they meet again 5 years later. I felt like all Max wanted to do was blame Belle for leaving and not telling him their daughter. Belle just took all the blame and put it mostly on herself. It didn't sound like Max tried looking for her at all. Not until he knew she was back in town. He was the one who pushed her away yet he didn't try to fight for her either. He gets mad at her with the thought of her sleeping with a guy yet he has been sleeping with other women for the past 5 years. I don't know to me Max wasn't someone I really liked in this book. I did like reading about the early days though. This book did have it moments so if you are a fan of the author I still suggest buying. I really can't wait for Rainer's book!
This book, for me, was a case in which the blurb created so much anticipation and the book just didn't quite meet my expectations. I wanted to like the book much more than I did. The idea behind the story was good, the follow through wasn't.
Max and Belle meet in college. Max is a star football player with an on again, off again girlfriend when he runs into quiet and shy Annabelle. At first they start off friends eventually turning into much more. Eventually marrying, Max starts running his family's club creating a fight club as well while Belle does her own thing.
One night changes everything and Max swirls out of control. He drinks, doesn't come home, fights, does drugs and gambles away all their money. Belle knows something is wrong but can never figure it out. One day she goes to the doctors and finds out she's pregnant but there is no money in her account to pay for the visit. She confronts her husband who tells her he doesn't love her, doesn't know if he ever did, and she needs to leave. To protect herself and her unborn baby, she leaves.
After five years away, her mother gets sick and she goes back home to care for her. Max knows where she is but never seeks her out. Belle, hearing through the grapevine that Max has changed, starts to think maybe she should not have kept their daughter from him and searches him out. They reunite and it's explosive.
*This may contain spoilers but it's hard to hide them when so many of my thoughts surround the choices these two make. So beware.*
As much as I love a second chance love story, this was just was a little weak for my liking. The only fault I saw in Belle's plan was not telling Max he had a daughter. I do not fault her at all for leaving him. She should have. He was not husband material at the end. He was selfish and harming her both mentally and emotionally as well as financially. I HATED that he blamed her for leaving and she also accepted she was at fault. He even said that her being pregnant could have saved him. IT WASNT HER JOB TO SAVE YOU, YOU SELFISH ASS.
Also his reasons for his downward spiral were weak. Sure it was devastating what happened but he didn't cause it to begin with. I've never been in that situation, but it seemed overblown.
Then while they're separated, Max basically reverts to his manwhore ways from college. It's swept under the rug like it's okay because she left but then he becomes a caveman wondering if she did the same thing (she didn't). A lot of time while reading I can deal with double standards but here there were so many and Max just seems so unapologetic for the majority of his actions that I just couldn't.
The story unfolded going from past to present and back again. I thought that was pretty well done but the story as a whole wasn't fleshed out enough. Everything was resolved really quickly. I wished for more time to digest everything. More angst. Just more.
While the execution of his sorry didn't wow me, I was engaged the whole time. I wanted to see an HEA. The secondary characters were also very interesting and the lead up to the next book has me very interested in what that story will entail.
Not my favorite of her books. Crossover characters like I love, but never connected with it. Wanted to love it, but more towards liked it.
