A reasonable story. It got a bit bogged down in places. The most irritating thing was the many references to bougainvillea being scented when it's not! (There is a very new variety that does have some scent, but it's not in old French villages.) Overall, it's okay. It drags in parts, but I kept reading to find out 'who dunnit it'! Maura is so unbelievably naïve for a 27 year old with all this silly running away nonsense (in high heels in a rainstorm with no money?) Fabienne and Jeannette were well described for older French women, but it was difficult to decide whether, from the narrative, they were in their 80s or their 60s. Unlike other readers, I didn't mind the ending.Tags : In the Shadows: An Outsiders Mystery (The Outsiders) (Volume 1) [Susan Finlay] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so , that I found other books by Susan Finlay to read. "In the Shadows" was a wonderful read and I would highly recommend it.
This book was a wonderful experience for me. When I had time off from work over the holidays, this book became my entertainment and company. It kept me guessing all the way to the end . I enjoyed the characters very much, especially the two grandmothers. Dave and Maura were very endearing also. I liked the setting being in France. It was interesting to escape to the little village of Reynier for a while with these characters and, since one of the main characters is an American, it made it easier for me to not feel like an outsider. I will miss them but hope to read the next book and hear more about them.
Good read. Blends a family drama with a good mystery. Enjoyed reading this!
Susan Finlay's "In the Shadows" is a mystery-lovers story that drew me in and kept me reading from the first page to the last. Set mostly in the small, rural French village of Reynier, the mystery begins when ex-Chicago detective Dave Martin encounters a young woman who seems to be either lost or on the run from something or someone. Intrigued, he begins to investigate, and the plot begins to thicken and diversify as his maternal grandmother and her best friend get involved and the young woman disappears.
Is he sticking his nose in where he shouldn't? He's had that experience before, and it cost him his detective's shield. His curiosity is aroused, he continues on. eventually solving the mystery of who the young woman Maurelle Dupre is and what has happened to her that makes her so fearful.
The plot lines are fascinating, the setting, in this gossipy little French village, is a delight.
If you like a mystery that is both intriguing and a delight to read, I highly recommend this. It's one of my favorite mysteries.
This was a fast-paced, tightly woven mystery and the characters were threaded through the story perfectly. The author pulled in all the loose ends and tied them together into a tidy bow. I recommend this story because the relationships and descriptions in France and London were well done and the storyline was great!
This is my 4th book by this author. I so enjoy her stories and always feel I am a part of the book. I judge a book by how immersed I get in the story and how well it flows. This was a great and interesting book. I learned as well as enjoyed the journey.
Maura Barrington is on the run. Her picture is on the front page of the Paris newspaper. She is wanted by the police. She has a bit of money in a duffle bag. Does she have time to get it before she finds a train out of Paris?
I don't usually like a book with foreign words that interupt my reading, but this one was an exception. I wanted to Maura to escape the police. I didn't want her to end up living in a cafe with money and food. So I kept reading.
The reward? An excellent book with many twists and turns with a bit of humor from Grandma. Read it you will like it.
